Lufthansa approves minimum €215.4 million takeover of Austrian

Lufthansa's supervisory board yesterday approved the acquisition of Austrian Airlines Group, starting with the purchase of state holding company OIAG's 41.56% share for €366,000 ($463,000). [ more ]

AEA: European airlines to post slight 2008 profit but face €1.7 billion 2009 loss

Assn. of European Airlines Secretary General Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus is forecasting that AEA's 35 members collectively will post a meager net profit of €300 million ($379.5 million) for 2008, down from €3.7 billion in 2007 and the €1.1-€1.8 billion forecast earlier this year, and a heavy loss in 2009. The UK government has unveiled a new Air Passenger Duty scheme that will impose ascending fees on passengers based on the distance travelled to/from UK airports, with those flying to Asia charged £ 85 each way by November 2010. The new system ...

Is a smart way to hold passengers directly accountable for the environmental impact of their air travel and will help lower aircraft emissions.
Is a serious mistake that will hurt airlines' long-haul business; it would have been better to continue imposing the same fee regardless of distance as is now the case with flights beyond Europe.
Is misguided; the government should have stuck with its plan to replace APD with a "per-plane" fee on airlines.
